THE HISTORY OF THE LASPS

The Los Angeles Society of Plastic Surgeons was founded over 30 years ago by a group of pioneering and innovative surgeons. These surgeons were located throughout Los Angeles and wanted to form an organization in which they could share their knowledge and surgical skills with one another. Their goal was to share this information in order to improve the quality of care they provided to patients.

The group initially formed an organization called "The Valley Council" in the late 1960's. The founding members were legends in the history of plastic surgery. They included esteemed surgeons such as Dr. Richard Grossman, Dr. Kurt Wagner, Dr. Dale Armstrong, and Dr. Dennis Thompson. Our most recent past president, Dr. Peter Grossman, is the son of founding member Richard Grossman, M.D..

The current President of the LASPS is John Diaz, M.D.

Over time, the members decided to continue focusing on the education of surgeons and promotion of excellence in patient care. The members met on a regular basis and discussed new techniques in plastic surgery and shared their experiences and lessons with one another. As the membership grew in size, they decided to change their name to the "Los Angeles Society of Plastic Surgeons."

The first president of this "new" organization was Dr. Dale Armstrong. Since then, the LASPS has continued to grow and flourish. The presidents who have followed have been leaders in the world of Plastic Surgery. They include:

  • Dr. Dale Armstrong - 1980-1982

  • Dr. Dennis Thompson - 1982-1997

  • Dr. Harold Clavin - 1997-1999

  • Dr. Gregory Kirianoff  - 2001 - 2004

  • Dr. Steven Hoefflin - 2005 - 2008

  • Dr. Geoffrey Keyes - 2008 - 2013

  • Dr. Peter Grossman - 2013 - 2018

  • Dr. John Diaz - 2018 - Present

Our society continues to focus on surgeon education and provides continuing medical education (CME) to members. This is a rare privilege and honor that few local plastic surgery societies can provide. We hold quarterly meetings with guest lecturers who are world renowned. Our annual symposium is exemplary for attracting guests from all over Southern California as well as guest speakers from all over the country who are at the forefront of Plastic Surgery. The goal of our efforts is to help our members excel in the field of Plastic Surgery and to provide our patients with the very best care possible.
